Time Series Databases in smart grids

Dear friends, in this issue, we will continue to talk about the application of time series database and the application of TSDB in the field of smart electricity consumption.

Time Series Databases in smart grids

Nowadays, daily life and enterprise production are inseparable from power equipment. Electricity consumption has become very common in our daily life, but you may not know that  we also face with various risks when using electricity, such as the overload of power or the excess temperature of lines due to long-term use of electrical appliances. These seemingly infrequent problems have always been major safety hazards.
Therefore, smart power consumption came into being, which is intelligent supervision on electrical lines and appliances when using electricity. It uses the Internet and big data technology to realize real-time communication between people and people, people and things, and things and things. For example, it collects data such as current, voltage, temperature, and power consumption generated from electrical lines, uses the big data analysis function to analyze and judge these data, and discovers potential safety hazards on electrical lines and equipments in real time. It will immediately send the alarm to the user administrators, guide the users to take action, eliminate hidden dangers, and thus nip problems in the bud. At the same time, it also supports multiple power protections such as leakage, overcurrent, short circuit, overload, overvoltage, and undervoltage, as well as self-inspection for missing reports, power limit, and power calculation.

Smart electricity platform architecture

The smart electricity platform provides comprehensive solutions for electrical safety supervision and energy data management. Through the intelligent terminal equipment of the Internet of Things, it integrates electrical, fire and other sensors, is compatible with communication protocol modules such as NB-IOT and MQTT, and finally forms a set of Internet of Things big data analysis service cloud platform. The smart terminal equipment of the smart power consumption platform is highly integrated with product functions such as fire protection and electrical monitoring. We only need to install it on the user's power distribution cabinet or terminal distribution box to realize collect real-time and accurate data of electrical line (“sensing layer”), and upload the data to the time-series database of distributed deployment through the wireless communication module through the MQTT protocol (“transport layer”). Then the application platform analyzes the received time-series data (“platform layer”), and timely sends early warning information to users, administrators, and other relevant persons through WeChat, SMS and App messages(“application layer”) in order to timely investigate and eliminate potential safety hazards.

Smart Electricity Security Governance

After we investigate and locate potential safety hazards such as fire through the business analysis platform, the risk assessment results will be sent to user terminals for reminder and guidance. By recording the electrical data of massive online terminal equipment, the big data of the safe electricity consumption industry is accumulated and analyzed, and trends such as electricity consumption and electricity safety can be effectively evaluated and predicted. At the same time, users can also conduct real-time detection of electric current and temperature of access terminals on the smart power client terminal, as well as trend data of equipment operating status, and view early warnings and expert advice pushed by the platform. Managers can view data changes such as residual current, wire temperature, and current of the monitored equipment on the functional side. They can respond and deal with potential safety hazards as long as they find something wrong. The smart electricity platform can also turn on the alarm according to the preset, predict and analyze the operating status of the electrical line in the intelligent mode, and send early warning information to the users on the basis of data analysis, making the electricity safety more intelligent.

At present, smart electricity use is still mainly piloted in industrial parks. Firstly, industrial electricity consumption is more expensive than domestic electricity consumption, and secondly, industrial electricity consumption carries a big risk for huge losses. Thirdly, the information base of the industrial park is more suitable for unified planning. The use of time series databases for corresponding monitoring can effectively reduce electricity costs and electricity consumption risks, and release the pressure on property management in the park. Therefore, the industrial park, power generation companies, power grid companies, enterprises in the park, and local firefighting officers and soldiers will all benefit in many ways.
